Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of artwork. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. When she was studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
